Chapter Eight

Though Bailey told herself that she wasn’t scared, her legs were so limp that she didn’t trust herself to stand upright. Her stomach tensed. She gulped down breath after breath, forcing her lungs to heave.

She squeezed her eyelids closed, trying to erase the image of Ross leaping toward her, the predatory gleam in his eye as he easily conquered the scant distance she’d put between them. How could she have been so gullible? My gracious, she knew better. Ross O’Shea had never given her a reason to trust him, and she’d been lulled by his reasonable tone, tricked by his actor’s guile. If she hadn’t escaped from him, what would Ross have done to her?

Bailey shuddered. His plans for revenge didn’t bear thinking about. She was frightened enough as it was.

Forcing herself to stand, she went to the kitchen, poured a glass of orange juice from the fridge and drank slowly. As always, in a crisis, she was able to pick herself up, dust herself off and move on. Her breathing calmed. Her heartbeat returned to a steady, normal thump. She was going to be all right. Now that she knew he was after her, she’d be ready.

When her doorbell chimed, she jumped.

“Who is it?”

“Me. Joe.”

She opened the door. “What took you so long?” “I got kind of turned around.” He sauntered inside, oblivious to her goose bumps, not noticing her fear. “I don’t know my way around this part of town. Finally, I had to dig my map out of the glove box and trace my route.”
